Search for Antimatter in Space with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer
نویسنده
چکیده
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a state of the art particle physics experiment for the extraterrestrial study of antimatter, matter and missing matter. AMS successfully completed the precursor STS91 Discovery flight (June 2nd-12th, 1998), completing 152 orbits at ±52 of latitude and about 400 km of height, collecting more than 100 million CR events. In this paper we report on the first flight experience and we present preliminary results on the search for nuclear antimatter. No antimatter nuclei with Z ≥ 2 were detected. We obtain a model dependent upper limit on ΦH̄e/ΦHe of < 1.14 10 . In the rigidity region between 1.6 to 20 GV we obtain a model independent, conservative upper limit on ΦH̄e/ΦHe of < 1.7 10 −6 and of < 2.8 10 for Z > 2, improving the results of previous searches performed with stratospheric balloons Invited talk at XIIIth Rencontres de Physique: Results and Perspectives in Particle Physics, La Thuile, Aosta Valley, February 22-27, 1999.

Search for Antimatter with the AMS Cosmic Ray Detector
Antimatter search results of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) detector are presented. About 10 triggers were collected in the 1998 precursor flight onboard space shuttle Discovery. This ten day mission exposed the detector on a 51.7◦ orbit at an altitude around 350km. Identification of charged cosmic rays is achieved by multiple energy loss and time-of-flight measurements. Bending inside t...
متن کاملPhysics Results from Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer 1998 Shuttle Flight
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a particle detector designed to detect antimatter. During the 10-day test flight on the space shuttle in June 1998, AMS detected 10 events. Upon analysis, no antimatter was found and the antimatter limit was reduced to 1.1 × 10. The proton spectrum shows some differences with the cosmic ray flux used in atmospheric neutrino simulation. A large amount of ...
متن کاملIndirect Search for Dark Matter with Ams in Positrons, Gamma and Antiprotons Channels
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), to be installed on the International Space Station, will provide data on cosmic radiations in a large energy range. The main physics goals in the astroparticle domain are the antimatter and the dark matter searches. Dark matter should be composed of non baryonic weakly interacting massive particles, a good candidate being the lightest SUSY particle in R-pa...
متن کاملThe Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS): search for antimatter and dark matter on the International Space Station
The disappearance of cosmological antimatter and the pervasive presence of dark matter are two of the greatest puzzles in the current understanding of the universe. The Big Bang model assumes that, at its very beginning, half of the universe was made out of antimatter. The validity of this model is based on three key experimental observations: the recession of galaxies (Hubble expansion), the h...
متن کاملDevelopment of the Gaseous Antiparticle Spectrometer for Space-based Antimatter Detection
We report progress in developing a novel antimatter detection scheme. The gaseous antiparticle spectrometer (GAPS) identifies antimatter through the characteristic X-rays emitted by antimatter when it forms exotic atoms in gases. The approach provides large area and field of view, and excellent background rejection capability. If the GAPS concept is successfully demonstrated, then it would be a...
